Is Light Ruining Your Health?

What goes around comes around.  Remember the old blue blockers commercials?  Well, they are back and bigger than ever, but not for all the reasons they were in the 1980’s.

Blue light is everywhere, and when it hits the particles in the air it scatters and gives the sky its blue color.  Your body uses blue light from the sun, or any light, to regulate your natural sleep and wake cycles or your circadian rhythm.   The use of technology today, with all its light emitting, could be wreaking havoc on your health by disrupting your circadian rhythm. 

The catch 22 here is that blue light also helps boost alertness, improve athletic performance, and elevate moods.   Studies are showing that it can have effects similar if not more prominent than those of coffee.   That’s an entire blog in and of itself, but it is worth noting.

On May 20, 2016 the FDA released the long awaited changes to the nutrition facts labels found on foods.   The final nutrition facts labels are better than I expected and I can say I am impressed by the changes that they have made.  In waiting for them to be released, I was skeptical as to what the final verdict would be.   Let’s review what they are and how they can help you make better food choices.

1.  Increase in font type size for “Calories”, “servings per container”, and “serving size”.  The number of calories and “Serving size” will be in bold type as well.   I like this feature for the fact that we beat these concepts into our clients and students because it is easily missed and is very important that it’s not missed.   Knowing the serving size and the number of servings in a food is the basis for the rest of the label.  To overlook this while consuming the entire drink or package, you are not realizing the result is a lot more going into your body....

Transparency: Changing your Eating Habits Made Easy 


People ask me all the time how they can live the life style I lead, or they think I lead! My philosophy is to make it “Transparent”. Transparency means it has to be simple and in small steps you take to get to the place you desire, whatever that is.


It really is simple and does not require big changes in your life style. I do not go out and forage in my yard for my meals! I eat a lot of the same things you do, I just get my food from different sources.


When I go to a grocery store I stay in the outside isles. I don’t venture into the boxes and bags of processed foods. Start there and replace some of those foods with produce and the real version of the food you want to buy that are in that bag or box. The other step is to buy from your local farmer. “All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed; second, it is violently opposed; and third, it is accepted as self-evident.” Or "this is worthless nonsense; this is an interesting, but perverse, point of view; this is true, but quite unimportant; I always said so."  I would like to say that I was always on board with this but I wasn't.  In the eighties as a young adult, I too was hook line and sinker into the fat free diet.  We were taught and told by the experts that fat would kill us.  Luckily for me, I soon acquired a few mentors that showed me the light about fat a long time ago.
